The Background & Structure

Background

In June 2011, SGM came into the glass market with the simple intention of providing glass solutions to designers and architects in their design. Noticing that there was a gap in the need for product customization in a market filled with standard safety glass products. With its extensive knowledge and resources in the China glass market, SGM went about its business of making designers and architects dreams come true.

Before long, SGM established itself to be a leading glass company in Malaysia providing solutions to design difficulties that were deemed impossible before. All this is achieved by our strong understanding of glass as a building material that can provide safety and strength, accentuate aesthetics, and provide heat and sound insulation at the same time.

The same yearning for more customization of glass application in buildings by designers and architects have seen SGM expand to neighboring countries like Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, and Myanmar.

Structure

SGM is managed by a team of glass professionals with its core being the quality control team based in China that ensures that the quality of glass supplied to each and every project where SGM is involved conforms astutely to the required standards of the project and the country’s standards for safety glass (MS1498) and coated glass (MS2397)

Our manufacturing partners hold the required PPSi certification by the CIDB of Malaysia in accordance to ACT520 since 2016.

The SGM Key Personnel

Deric Chang

Deric Chang

Deric joined the glass industry in 1997 as a Sales and Marketing Executive with Glasspec Sdn Bhd. Being passionate with everything to do with glass coupled with amazing seniors both in the company and in the industry, he was able to quickly establish a foothold in the industry. He later joined G.James Malaysia Sdn Bhd as their Sales and Marketing Manager in 2000. With G.James, he was exposed to a wider market audience specifically the ASEAN countries, Australia and New Zealand. With G.James he was exposed to energy efficient glass products like Low-e which he felt was very important going forward as global energy costs will only continue to rise and that material used in buildings must tackle this problem.

In June 2011, decided to venture into business and started SG Materials (M) Sdn Bhd (SGM).

12 years have since passed and SGM is now an established “boutique” glass company in Malaysia. Along with technical expertise in all matters about glass, Deric’s true passion was to help Architects and Designers realize their design vision and dreams. Glass being such a versatile, yet delicate building material to use, it can, at times, be a very difficult item to incorporate into a building design yet no one can ever bear the dour thought of a building without windows or glass.

Deric’s answer to Simon Sinek’s question Why? is simple. That he wants to utilize his extensive glass knowledge built over the years to assist designers in their building design by efficient customization. While standard offerings in the industry pay the bills, he spends much of his time on customization, on how to incorporate glass into the most difficult of designs yet in as cost efficient as possible.
